Attending LA Art Week isn't merely about perusing the fairs. The city’s art scene thrives in the unconventional: if it doesn’t feel at least a little like a Lynchian cultural odyssey in search of something special, but unknown at the start of the journey, you’re doing it wrong. We’ve put together a tour of LA's gallery scene that traverses the city, East to West. It’s the perfect way to kill an afternoon.

Start in the Arts District at The BOX Gallery, where the only thing more avant-garde than the artwork is finding the entrance. Then, head over to Chateau Shatto, and enjoy all that the iconic Bendix building has to offer. Maybe you will get lucky and run into an artist check out their amazing roster.  Then head over to a Downtown art hub favorite and our very own LA voice Ben Lee at Nicodim and our friends at Vielmetter. Night Gallery where you can catch Barrão's first solo show with the gallery and in Los Angeles.

In West/Hollywood, top hits for me are CWG with a first LA solo exhibition of Italian artist Vincenzo De Cotiis. Considered one of the pioneers of international contemporary collectible design, Jeffrey Deitch (make sure to watch the @art interview w/ Mr. Wash), Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, and of course pillars of the La gallery scene such as  Regen Projects have become as iconic as any landmark on the strip and are a must-see during any trip to LA. Over at KARMA, Luigi Zuccheri’s surrealist postwar depictions of rural Northern Italy feel about as far from the city as it gets and have a lovely pairing with the synesthetic works of Ouattara Watts who employs brilliant colors, dynamic patterns, and myriad symbols to explore the spiritual ties between people that transcend location or nationality.

Those craving a taste of the international art world can find it in Venice at LA Louver Gallery. End the day on the canals at Maison Lune. Check out @art bts sneak peek into the show coming out this week. This private home and salon space is the way to end an art-filled day as you are in Venice’s restaurant heaven.  See you around LA Art Week!
